Man jailed after shouting ‘Orange b******s’ in Magherafelt

Brian Stewart Coulter (53), of Princess Terrace in the town, admitted charges of disorderly behaviour at his home on May 20-21.

He also admitted behaviour likely to cause a breach of the peace in the Leckagh estate, Magherafelt, on June 10.

The court heard that on the evening of May 20 police received a number of calls from members of the public concerned about Coulter banging on a gate and using abusive language.

A PPS lawyer said police arrived and the defendant was arrested and taken to Limavady custody suite where he was charged.

Continuing the lawyer said on June 10, Coulter made a number of 999 calls to police claiming he had been assaulted in the Leckagh estate.

She said while police escorted him out of the estate he shouted abuse at a group of people calling them “Orange b...s”.

The lawyer said police were told by a member of the group to “get him out of here.”

A defence lawyer told the court Coulter had contacted the police fearing he would be assaulted and ended-up being arrested. He added that the defendant had a dependence upon alcohol.

District Judge Des Perry remarked that Coulter’s behaviour had angered residents and the offences arose out of “a huge over indulgence in alcohol.”
